Africa
Despite vast human and natural resources, much of Africa languishes in extreme poverty. Compared to much of Africa, Europe is a land of plenty – the average European earns about twenty times what the average African does. In 2009, 22 of 24 nations identified as having “Lowe Human Development” by the United Nations’ Human Development Index were located in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Malawi
A former British colony, the Republic of Malawi is a landlocked country in south-east Africa. The name Malawi comes from the Maravi, an old name for the Nayanja people that inhabit the area. Malawi is also sometimes referred to as, “The Warm Heart of Africa”, but whilstit may have a warm heart, Malawi ranks amoungst the world’s least developed countries, their rural and agricultural economy relying heavily upon international aid. However, over successive years, the amount of aid required has decreased as Malawi has begun to develop and improve.

Kaponda
Kaponda district in an hours drive from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. It comprises of a total of 36 villages. Like most of Malawi, the Kaponda district is entirely rural, with an extremely basic economy that is based upon agriculture. And, just like much of Malawi, Kaponda district is vastly underdeveloped and its people impovrished as a reult.
